Elysa - The fountain of youth
The Gods created the fountain of life to cure illnesses that would have or else devastated humanity. Its initial purpose was to heal, not to grant immortality. However, people abused the waters' magic to fight age, to grant them strength, eventually finding a way to cheat death, so the Gods hid the fountain from humanity. Many tried and failed to find the origin of the waters of life, often tricked by the Gods many tests, for the only one who could reach the fountain would be someone pure, unselfish, someone willing to do anything for the greater good.
Elysa was born and raised in the outskirts of a Nordic village. Having lost her mother at a very young age, Elysa grew very attached to her older brother, who would often relieve her of the many chores her father imposed, and encouraged her to always stay true to who she was, a kind and unselfish girl. Her family was never rich, but she never lacked anything for both her father and her brother were honest working men. However, a plague invaded the Nordic kingdom, causing famine and disease to wash over their lands. At this point is that Elysa is convinced by her brother to try and find the waters of life. After a long quest, they manage to find the fountain’s location but when her brother tries to pass the tests, he can't. Although the young girl did not know it, her brother was motivated by greed, jealous of the Gods’ power and abilities. He craved to be more than just a village boy. Elysa, however, does manage to pass the tests, the entry to cavern unveiling itself before her eyes. Her brother, in an attempt to secure the water for himself, shows his true colors and it is then that Elysa chooses to protect the fountain, leading to her brother falling to his death. Because she showed strength in doing the one thing that would hurt her the most for the greater good, and because the waters needed a protector, the Gods decided to transfer the waters properties into her soul, knowing she was pure and would not misuse it. Elysa became the fountain of youth, never aging, with the ability to heal herself and others at will.
From then on, she lived secluded from most of the world, showing herself only to heal the desperate and the worthy. As time passed, she loved and she lost in a never ending cycle, because as the story goes, all magic comes with a price.
In one of her journeys, she traveled to the broken kingdom of Camelot, having heard of the legend of Merlin, a wizard so powerful she had the hopes that he would be able to separate her from the waters properties. It was there that she heard of the mysterious strangers who had arrived, alongside them the savior who could release Merlin from his prison. Upon approaching the dark haired woman who claimed to be the savior, she could see the effects that a dark talisman had left on her. Slowly, it had begun to suck the light magic out of her, and would inevitably cause her heart to be rid of the light. And so, Elysa used her power to cure the woman, learning her name was actually Regina and that was in fact not the savior but a friend of whom could release Merlin. So, Elysa did what she did best, she hid near the castle awaiting the moment in which she could finally ask the warlock for his help. However, that moment never came. Instead, Merlin was killed and the curse was set upon them all, including Elysa, taking her to the strange land of Storybrooke.
